Silent Talker - Adaptive Profiling Systems (APS)
Darwin, in The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals, stated: "A man when moderately angry, or even when enraged, may command the movements of his body, but...those muscles of the face which are least obedient to the will, will alone betray a slight and passing emotion." Also,
Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in his seminal work Beyond Good and Evil: "The mouth may lie, but the face it makes nonetheless tells the truth." More than a century later, we have Silent Talker which is a revolutionary computerised, non-invasive psychological profiling system which analyses involuntary non-verbal behaviour. CFN was the world's first investigative organisation to use Adaptive Profiling Systems in field operations. This system was supremely successful in detecting processes associated with 'deception.' It is able to detect different behaviour patterns in the face indicative of 'deception' and 'truth' significantly above chance levels; furthermore, other channels of information are being added such as hand, arm and torso movement, as well as thermal imagery capabilities. It can also be programmed to detect other psychological states such as 'threat intention'. Specific applications include:
- Pre-employment screening
- PACE interviews /Police Interviews of suspects and victims
- PV(TS) - positive vetting (top secret) and EPV - extended positive vetting
- Airport check-in security screening
Preliminary research investigations are being conducted by CFN to determine the feasibility of using Adaptive Profiling Systems to assist security staff in analysing behaviours of potentially high-risk airline passengers, which can be done covertly, and with minimal equipment. This would enhance existing security arrangements such as the Screening Passengers by Observation Techniques (SPOT) programme, being implemented in US Airports.
They are a fully implemented and tested psychological profiling system, which uses Artificial Neural Networks and other Artificial Intelligence paradigms to classify behaviour as either deceptive or truthful. These networks are trained, rather than programmed, to perform various tasks, and therefore become expert systems in their own right.
The system operates simply with the use of a camera and a laptop computer, or handheld device. Firstly, the camera and computer are intiialised, the interview process starts and the camera passess video frames of the interviewee to the computer. The artificial neural networks track the body parts (i.e. facial features, head movements etc.) and extract the various channel data over time and to analyse patterns across channels (e.g. blushing, eye movement types, and others, currently totalling 24). Then the computer displays a classification to the interviewer in real time. APS is completely mobile and can be used with ease in field situations, or embedded with your existing video surveillance systems. It can be trained to classify any type of non-verbal behaviour for an infinite number of applications.
Adaptive Profiling Systems operate both in real time and off-line processing modes, therefore our staff can be used to either participate in the investigation process itself on site to provide instant intelligence, or, receive videotape of the interviews (preferably of the upper body with the face in the centre of the frame, clearly visible) for subsequent analysis and reporting. The system can analyse simultaneously more than one subject in the frame of reference, and synchronise the extraction of information between each target. Historical interview video tapes, of say cold cases, can easily be analysed if they are of sufficient optical quality. Digitised audiovisual material can be sent via our secure intranet portal; the preferred format being AVI (Audio Video Interleave). APS analysis can also be received in real time via the use of your personal Webcam. Please note that Adaptive Profling Systems are not available to the general public.
